Date of Initiation

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” -  Albert Einstein, Relativity: The Special and the General Theory

The Department of Physics started its journey in 2006 with B.Sc. general course under the University of Burdwan. In 2016, the department had initiated Honours course in Physics under the headship of Prof. Goutam Mandal. The intake capacity at that time was 15 students. In 2017, the department continued its journey with Physics Honours (CBCS System) under Bankura University. This is the only girls' college in the district of Bankura where Physics Honours is being run. The intake capacity has been increased to 40 owing to the huge demand. Since the academic year 2023-24, the intake capacity has increased to 65 in the Physics Major Course under the NEP-2020.  The department is dedicated to developing outstanding graduates, many of whom have gone on to pursue higher education and contribute to scientific innovation, teaching, and learning, all with a focus on addressing national and global challenges. Several students from the department have completed or are studying M. Sc. at reputed universities, such as Calcutta University, Visva-Bharati University, Vidyasagar University, Bankura University, Kalyani University, Presidency University, Burdwan University, IIT Jammu, IIT Puducherry, IISC Bangalore, and many other reputed universities.

The department has three modern, well-equipped laboratories, a dark room, and a computer laboratory. All laboratories have high-speed internet (wi-fi) facilities and are fully air-conditioned.  The classrooms are equipped with projectors, internet, and whiteboards for smart learning. The departmental library is enriched with over 200 volumes.

In addition to academics, various co-curricular activities and outreach programmes are organized in the form of remedial classes, group discussions, student seminars, study tours, freshers’ welcome, farewell, and alumni meet that are routinely conducted to trigger and shape informed young minds.

VISION:

The Department of Physics accomplishes to furnish students to compete and contribute to the various scientific advancements both in pure and applied physics. The department motivates the students to become researcher in near future so that they become builders of modern society in general and the country at large. It trains the minds of young physicists towards application oriented research work by providing students with multiple learning opportunities like Ability based learning, role-play, formal courses with integrated laboratory, and colloquium programs

OBJECTIVES:
To explore and extend high standard in teaching pedagogy. A variety of objectives are designed as follows:

1. To develop the spirit of inquiry.
2. To assimilate education and research by incorporating recent discoveries, modern techniques into the curriculum.
3. To sustain close working student-faculty relationship.
4. To improve inter-disciplinary thinking by providing students with educational opportunities.
